NLAPW Muncie Branch Writing Contest


The National League of American Pen Women (est. 1897) is a professional organization of women artists, composers, and writers. The Muncie Branch has been active since 1944.

Writing Contest Description

This writing contest, sponsored by the Muncie Branch of the NLAPW is for amateur writers aged 55 years and older. It is open to both men and women contestants. The purpose of this contest is to promote the fun of writing and to recognize local talent in our community.

Submissions will be judged in 3 categories:

1) Fiction

2) Non-fiction

3) Poetry

Each category will be judged by local league members. Winners will be honored on June 22, 2013, (place: TBA)

Cash prizes will be given to first, second and third place winners in each category. All winners will be published on the Muncie Branch Pen Women blog and in the Branch publication of The Fun of Writing Winners Booklet.  

We welcome multiple submissions. See specific guidelines below.

Rules and Guidelines

All entries must be original works, in English. Plagiarism will result in disqualification.

Entries must be submitted online. Send an email to River Lin: and attach submission as a Microsoft word document. Within 24 hours a confirmation of receipt will be sent to ensure the attached entry can be opened.

Deadline: submissions are accepted from February 28, 2012 will be closed at MIDNIGHT, MAY 10

Poetry limit: 20 lines


Fiction and non-fiction word limit: 900



Deadlines and Fees

All entries must be received no later than May 10, 2013.

Entry fee is $5.00 per submission


Winners will be announced by telephone and/or email no later than June 8, 2013



Winners and Prizes

First place winners will be awarded $25.00

Second place winners will be awarded $20.00

Third place winners will be awarded $15.00



How to submit

ONLY electronic submissions accepted:

Send an email to River Lin and attach your submission as an attachment (Microsoft word document). In the subject box, write “writing contest 2013 entry”.

All submissions must include a cover page with the author’s name, address, telephone number, email address and category of submission. (See attached cover letter template)

Entries should have the author’s name on the cover page only; all subsequent pages should have only the page number and the title of the work (to facilitate fair judging).

Submission fees should be sent as a check or money order made out to NLAPW Muncie Branch and sent to Phronia Clayton, 11111 U.S. Highway 35 S., Muncie, IN 47304
